Ice Cream That Tastes Like Cannabis, The Danks

LONG BEACH, CA – At 4:20pm on 4/20 Long Beach Creamery launches our cannabis inspired ice cream, The Danks at our Downtown Long Beach shop (222 East Broadway Ave, Long Beach, CA 90802).

For Long Beach Creamery founder, Dina Amadril creating The Danks is a passion project “I had this wild fear thought about a year ago. It felt like everyone was throwing CBD or THC into their food products and we were missing out. I talked myself down from the ledge by buying a few items, paying hella dollars and realizing this soda just tastes like soda – I was missing the flavor of the cannabis.

Those amazing terpenes that give Blue Dream its blueberry undertones or the sweet tang of Pineapple Express. Why couldn’t that terpene profile be an ice cream flavor? It can! And it’s magic all on its own.”

Blue Dream, Pineapple Express, Granddaddy Purp and OG Kush Chip are the four flavors available on 4/20. The Danks will be sold as a stash: all four pint flavors and a freezer tote bag for $60. Available at our downtown shop and online at longbeachcreamery.shop for pickup or local delivery at 4:20pm on 4/20.

While The Danks ice cream does not contain THC or CBD it will contain the terpene profiles of the cannabis strain with some extra shop made mix ins to accentuate the flavor. Terpenes are the building blocks of aroma and scent in all plants, used everyday in bath oils, flavor extracts and now cannabis flavored ice cream.

For those who just want to give it a taste there will be mini-scoop samplers for $7 in the shop on 4/20.

The Danks launch also showcases pint label designs from Long Beach artists. Corey Wolford, Jason Keam, Kate Maleki and Mike R. Baker were commissioned to design a Danks flavor label. Working with The Danks color palette they have each created some awesome collectable label art.

Evolution of LB Crack

First introduced in March of 2017, our LB Crack flavor was named after a Christmas Crack cookie recipe that we adapted. We added the “LB” to create the LBC acronym, matching our company name and the city we love.

It felt like a fated name to me when you put all those elements together. Back in 2017, I really didn’t account for the history of the word “crack” in reference to drug usage and addiction. As we scooped the flavor to customers that year, the double entendre of the name was evident. The majority of customers had fun with the name, but a few brought up issues that triggered them. We would address each incident as it happened, and explain the Christmas Crack cookie that’s in the ice cream.

Signature Flavor

In February of 2019, LB Crack became such a popular flavor that we put it in our Signature Flavor line up. A month before the Signature Ceremony we polled our followers on Facebook and Instagram about the LB Crack name – asking if it caused any offense or triggered anyone. The response was an overwhelming no, chill out, it’s fun – with a small sprinkle of opposition. We went forward with the Signature Ceremony and the name LB Crack.

Today, we want to be fully in sync with the business we want to become. The name LB Crack needs to evolve to better represent how we want to support our community.

Saltine Dream

The most unique part of this flavor is the cracker toffee that we make out of saltine crackers, butter, sugar and chocolate. Cooking these ingredients together makes a cracker toffee that ice cream lovers really enjoy. We decided to focus on this for the new name – Saltine Dream (suggested by Isom Harris, Shift Leader at our Downtown Shop).

With the new name decided, we turn to you to help us decide on the label representation for Saltine Dream. Kate Maleki, our label designer, has presented two options for you to vote on.

Please reply with which label style you would like to see on your pints of Saltine Dream – A or B. We will review all the feedback and announce which label style will be printed on July 4.

It will take a few weeks for us to make the complete change to the new name, so you will still see pints labeled LB Crack for a bit until the voting is over and we can get new labels printed.

Thanks for your patience with us as we evolve our most popular ice cream flavor. The ingredients will not change – Saltine Dream will still be made with organic vanilla ice cream, chunks of cracker toffee, and swirls of fudge sauce.

BISCUITS & JAM – Toasted, buttered and honeyed biscuit pieces in a honey vanilla ice cream. Organic peach and apricot jams are folded in throughout. Ingredients:  organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolk, organic buttermilk, organic buttered scone biscuit, organic peach jam, organic apricot jam, honey, vanilla, cream cheese, salt.

GINGER PEACHFresh ginger and organic peaches flavor the ice cream and jam mix in. Pralined pecans add a southern crunch – making Ginger Peach the belle of the ball! Ingredients: organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolk, organic buttermilk, organic peach & ginger jam, pralined pecans, vanilla, cream cheese, salt.

PEACH SORBET – Fresh organic peaches cooked with Muscovado sugar and organic sugar. Organic apricots and meyer lemons help balance out the sweet peach flavor.

CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY SORBET – Rich organic cocoa, organic strawberries and organic sugar create a smooth chocolate treat.

ELVIS – Crafted after Elvis’ favorite sandwich. A Banana ice cream with peanut butter swirl and crispy candied bacon. Ingredients: organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolk, organic buttermilk, bananas, peanut butter swirl, mascarpone cheese, and candied bacon.

WHISKEY VANILLA* – Not your typical vanilla – Rebel Yell whiskey help to highlight the smooth vanilla flavor of this classic ice cream. Ingredients: organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolk, organic sweet cream buttermilk, Rebel Yell, Cream Cheese, Vanilla Extract, Vanilla Bean, Sea Salt. * Liquor has been added for flavor – food grade – most alcohol cooked off.

MIDNIGHT OOLONG – Dark, dry and fudgy. Mountain Tea Organic Oolong Tea adds a wise, rich flavor to the full dark chocolate. Ing: organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolk, organic sweet cream buttermilk, oolong tea, cocoa powder, 70% cocoa bar, cream cheese & sea salt.

BURNT CARAMEL – Caramelized Demerera sugar leaves burnt notes on the tongue, while the organic cream smooths it out for a sweet finish. Ingredients: organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolk, organic sweet cream buttermilk, Demerara sugar, cream cheese, butter, Himalayan pink salt.

BLACK RING COFFEE – Lightly roasted coffee from local roaster Black Ring Coffee is steeped in organic cream. A fresh and flavorful treat. Ingredients: organic cream, organic nonfat milk, organic cane sugar, organic egg yolk, organic sweet cream buttermilk, Black Ring Coffee, Cream Cheese,  Sea Salt.
